Walter L. Mitchell

Walter L. Mitchell, 79, of Mifflinburg won the checkered flag in his final race on Saturday, April 18, 2026 surrounded by his loving family and friends at Wellspan Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. He was born September 22, 1946, in Lewisburg, a son of the late Walter H. and Pauline (Hoffer) Mitchell. Walter was married to the former Vickie L. McCartle who survives. He was an avid Nascar fan and enjoyed going to Selinsgrove Raceway where he sponsored several cars. Walter was a social member of VFW Post 1964 and enjoyed dancing to the Now and Then band and having fun with friends. He loved to hunt and enjoyed playing poker with his buddies at the camp. He drove for many years with North American and Allied Van Lines as a long-distance truck driver and had many stories about life on the road. In the evenings you could find him hard at work on his word search books. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Surviving in addition to his wife Vickie is one daughter, Linda (Jerry) Johnson; one grandchild, Dakota Johnson; two stepchildren, Luther (Amaka) Manning and Christina (Ed) Holliday; three brothers, Richard, Dave, and Brian Mitchell, and one sister, Shelva Cherry. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 29 at 2:00 pm in Hartleton Cemetery, Route 45, Hartleton. Arrangements are by the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
