Joy K. Swartz, 78, formerly of Millerstown, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Perry Village in New Bloomfield. She was born Jan. 29, 1947, in Oakland, Garrett County, Md., a daughter of the late Rev. George D. and Margaret (Keller) Birk. Joy was a 1964 graduate of Middleburg High School and a 1968 graduate of Shippensburg University. On Aug. 12, 1979, she married Glenn B. Swartz, who preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2014. Joy was a school teacher at the Greenwood Elementary School. She attended the Thompsontown Baptist Church. She enjoyed home decorating, jewelry, and socializing with friends. She also served as a manager of the senior center in Millerstown, where she organized events for the center. When teaching, she went out of her way to do special things for her students. She found great joy in her family and especially enjoyed gathering with them at the holidays. She is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Lynn Thomas, of Beavertown, and Lois and Vance Wagner, of Mechanicsburg; one niece; five nephews; and two great-nephews. A viewing will be held on Friday, Sept. 26, at the Thompsontown Baptist Church, 269 Birch Drive, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. with Pastor Donald Henrikson officiating. Burial will be in the Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Richfield.
