Allen Lee Shirk

Allen L. Shirk, 77 of McAlisterville, passed away on Feb. 21, 2025.

Born in Lewistown, Pa., he was the son of the late Zane and Faye Shirk, of Beaver Springs.

He graduated from West Snyder High School, Class of 1966. After graduation from high school, Allen was the owner of Shirks Flowers in Beavertown. A florist for more than 20 years, Allen assisted countless families during celebrations and important events. Allen also worked at Empire Poultry in Mifflintown. Through both jobs, Allen loved connecting with the many employees, customers and colleagues who became friends.

Allen was a lifelong gardener and enjoyed family gatherings, a game of Rook, a libation, and conversations of the past.

Allen was a "Christmas baby," and a left hander with a strong memory for dates and names. His ability to connect with people through empathy and compassion allowed him to secure many long term friendships. Allen’s body began to fail, but his many friends and family members helped him to remain independent in his home. A special thanks to Rick Ulrich, Ed Briggs, Donald Palm, Sam Edmiston and many more.

Allen was proceeded in death by many aunts and uncles who he remained close with throughout his life.

Allen is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Malinda Shirk, of Beaver Springs and niece Jamie L. and husband Jed Kidd, of Middleburg (their children Ace and Axl), and nephew Jeremy Z. Shirk and wife Breanne Shirk, of Beaver Springs (their children Tansy and Clover). Additionally, Allen is survived by his kind and dutiful cousin, Mary “Sissy” Ehrenzeller, of McAlisterville and friend Ben Hughes of Lancaster.

The family celebrates the extreme kindness of the employees of Geisinger Lewistown who made a difference in his final days. A private celebration will be held at a future date.
